Plastic not so Fantastic

Plastic washed up on our coast is obvious and clearly visible. Sadly the plastic pollution is there.

For more than 50 years, global production and consumption of plastics has continued to rise. An estimated 299 million tons of plastics were produced in 2013, representing a 4 per cent increase over 2012.

Plastic is versatile, lightweight, flexible, moisture resistant, strong, and relatively inexpensive. That’s why we like it and buy plastic goods. However, some of those qualities can be harmful. Durable and very slow to degrade, plastic materials are polluting our oceans and seas and are entering the food chain as they break down and are consumed by marine life. And of course, we see the evidence on our lovely beaches.

Take a walk along our fabulous beach here in Sennen and back and keep an eye open and you’ll be amazed at the amount of discarded and washed up sea plastic.

Plastic straws are one of top polluters on our beaches that take years to break down. Used only once they remain a threat to marine life and the ecosystem for many years.

Saying no to the plastic straw in your drink is only a small thing but makes a huge difference.

So join us in disposing of rubbish responsibly and say no to the plastic straw.

Blue Flag and Seaside Award for Sennen Cove

Twenty five of the South West’s best beaches have been awarded the coveted Blue Flag Award.  With Sennen Cove winning the award for the first time.
The award is a reflection of the hard work by locals to keep the beach area in perfect condition.

The prestigious Blue Flag is the international standard for the best beaches in the world, a certification by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE)[1] that a beach meets its stringent standards.

The award is great news for local residents and we are so proud of our beach and the joy it brings us every day. This award gives visitors the reassurance of the excellence of the beach at Sennen Cove.

Local Surfer Making Waves in National Competitions

Sennen is a mecca for surf enthusiasts from all over the UK. Its position in the heart of Cornwall and at the foot of the country means Sennen is blessed with some of the cleanest and most consistent ocean swell in the UK.

There is some great local surf talent on show every day on the beach and so it’s so great to be able to celebrate when one of our own does so well on a wider stage.
George Carpenter is a local surfer now making waves on a national scale. At the age of just 16 finishing 2nd in the Under 18’s category at the English National Surf Championships in Perrenporth at the start of May. This great result puts George firmly on the national stage and makes him eligible for the national team.
With surfing officially an Olympic sport for 2020, tantalizingly this means George will be in his prime when Tokyo 2020 rolls around and surfing makes its high profile debut.
George hit the waves when he was just 8 but started properly when 10. Now in his 3rd season, he has been building towards this great result finishing in the British Nationals last season with a strong 5th place.

Next up is the Surfaced Pro competition this weekend ( 3,4th June ) at Watergate Bay Cornwall – the first leg of the UK Pro Tour followed by the unique and exciting Pro Night Surf Event at Fistral Beach on the 16th and 17th of June.
Depending on how George fares in these two events he may then travel all the way to Thurso in Scotland for the final event in October with an aim of toping the UK table in the Under 18’s category.

During the summer George is down at Sennen riding the fabulous clean swell we all enjoy and is one of the team of great instructors teaching on the beach. George is following in some fine footsteps and with many previous competition winners in the water every day at Sennen. Your surf instructor could be a current or previous national champion!
Congratulations George on a fine result in the English Nationals. At Ben Tunnicliffe Sennen Cove we’ll all be routing for you this summer in the Pro events and who knows, maybe we’ll have another local hero to cheer in Tokyo 2020 to follow in the footsteps of the great Helen Glover from Newlyn in London 2012. Go George!

Sennen Spring Beach Clean 2017

April 3rd – 9th. Surfers Against Sewage & Ecover Call For Volunteers To Help Clean Beaches & Dramatically Increase Marine Plastic Recycling

Surfers Afgainst Sewage ( SAS ) have co-ordinated the first big beach clean of 2017 for the week of 3rd – 9th April. As in previous years we expect a large group of volunteers to hit both Sennen and Gwenver to help clear the beach of plastic and other debris to help improve the marine environment and make the beach a nicer place to be in the process.

Dave Muir of Sennen Surfing Centre is the SAS local rep and has been arranging the big beach clean for Sennen and Gwenver for a number of years and will again be co-ordinating the local effort this season.

The big beach clean at Sennen is always a fun event to get involved in with participants enjoying a fun walk along the beach and a good chat and a coffee at Ben Tunnicliffe Sennen Cove afterwards. And it’s great for our precious coastal and marine environment.

This year SAS is expecting over 10,000 volunteers to help remove some 50,000 plastic bottles from our beaches across the UK plus other plastic rubbish washed up with the tide.

Contact the restaurant or Dave Muir at www.sennensurfingcentre.com for further information

2nd Annual Sennen Surf Contest

A fun, family-friendly Surf Contest is returning to Sennen Cove for its second year this October, as we partner with three other local businesses to host the event.

Ben and the team are working with Sennen Surfing Centre, Sennen Surf Company Shop and Smart Surf School to plan the two-day event on 28th and 29th October, which will see surfers of all ages and abilities take to the water.

The first day of competition will end with an evening event here at the restaurant (in our new outside bar or ‘Surfers Den’), followed by a second day of competitive events and a prize ceremony.

Sennen Cove was named one of the top ten surf locations in the world by The Guardian newspaper recently, alongside destinations in Mexico, Mozambique and Hawaii.

Sennen was singled out for its consistency, lack of crowds, and its wild and unspoiled location; conditions competitors will be able to lap-up during this half-term event.

Dave Muir, Head Coach at Sennen Surfing Centre, is looking forward to marking the end of another extremely busy and rewarding summer season:

“It’s been a fantastic summer here at Sennen, with record numbers learning to surf with us or improving their skills. For example, our Ladies Surf Club on a Friday night has been hugely popular. The Surf Contest will be the perfect opportunity to celebrate what everyone has achieved.”

We can’t wait to act as the hub for this exciting event. Competitors and spectators will be able to enjoy great food and drink in relaxed surroundings as they watch the competition unfold; fringe events will include beach games, barbeques and live music.

Ben commented: “I’m really looking forward to the Surf Contest – in fact my whole family are keen to get involved! It’s the perfect opportunity for everyone to come together before winter hibernation kicks in.”

The Sennen Surf Contest is also a chance to reflect and celebrate the life of local lifeboatman and surfer Ashley Moffatt, whom the community continues to remember fondly over a decade since his fatal car accident.

Everyone from beginners through to serious surfers will have the chance to take part, with prizes in the form of cash, vouchers and surfing gear available in several categories.

There are also opportunities for brand sponsors to get involved – please contact Sennen Surfing Centre for more information.

Yoga on the Terrace Returns

We were so pleased with the popularity of our yoga classes last summer, and are thrilled to be able to deliver these gentle, life-affirming sessions once again.

Starting from the 30th July, local practitioner Julie Stone of Land’s End Yoga will be leading classes twice a week (every Saturday and Tuesday at 9am). Taking place on our terrace, Julie’s yoga sessions are an unbeatable way to start the day; exercise and meditation combined, overlooking the golden sand of Sennen Cove, with the sounds of the ocean as your workout soundtrack.

The sessions are suitable for all abilities and will run throughout the summer until 3rd September. We serve brunch from 10am, providing the perfect excuse to stay on after your workout and refuel ready for the day ahead.

Julie combines expert knowledge of Ashtanga, Iyengar and Hatha yoga styles, and also brings a compassionate approach to her practice – drawing on yoga’s therapeutic and rehabilitative benefits. Her classes at Sennen will be gentle, relaxing and inspiring, combining movement and meditation in a supportive and nurturing environment.

Julie is also offering the opportunity to book private sessions with her here on the terrace, for those who want to focus on a specific aspect of their yoga practice, or perhaps are looking for one-to-one support.

There is no need to book – simply turn up. Please wear appropriate clothing, and your own yoga mat if possible (mats will be provided for those that need them). Sessions last an hour.

Sennen Ladies Surf Club – First Hand!

Running the restaurant and having a young family is challenging enough, so
I never thought that I would be willing to jump into the sea on
Friday evening to join first ladies only surfing club! Dave (owner of
Sennen Surfing Centre and Sennen Surf Shop) says that this is the UK’s  ladies
only club. Gosh! This puts everything into perspective!
Usually family (certainly my family) going to the beach means: boys and
my husband in the water and I am on the beach trying to catch up with
reading and some peace and quiet. Its no surprise to me that ladies surfing clubs are
rare! And the wet suits! What a palava!
Anyway, despite many obstacles on the day I could not avoid the moment of truth so I bravely joined the rest of keen ladies.

We had a short session on the beach with a wonderful young teacher – part of Dave’s team and off we went into the water. I never thought I would have so much fun! It was great! The sun was shining, waves were just right (very small!) and
we all had a go. I struggled for most of the session – balancing whilst laying on the board was a problem for me for a start; but after a short while I stopped worrying
and just went for any and every small wave that came. It really was fun.
I even managed to almost stand on the board! My children would be very proud of me I thought and I felt great afterwards.
We finished the session with a glass of prosecco on the terrace of the
restaurant watching a wonderful Sennen sunset! What a fabulous evening!
But I think the biggest surprise for me was to wake up the next morning – my first thought of the day – how great it would be to go surfing today! Have I caught the surfing bug already?

Sennen Ladies Surf Club – every Friday 8 pounds including a a glass of prosecco on the restaurant terrace.

#TasteOfSennen

We are on the hunt for intrepid foodies of all ages, who have tried something new here at our restaurant this summer. As a reward we are offering two families lunch on the house! See prize details below…

As parents of young children, Ben and Kinga know that it can be difficult to persuade little people to try new things, even when you know they are missing out on something really tasty. Even as adults, we often decide that we don’t like something before we’ve really given it a shot.

So this summer we are on a mission to encourage our lovely guests to try something for the first time. Anything from your very first taste of Cornish crab, to a freshly shucked oyster, marinated olives, even a particularly smelly cheese or smoked fish for breakfast…

You never know – your new food experience might even join surfing, kite flying, or sand castle building as one of the funniest and most memorable moments of your holiday, especially if all the family take part!

How To Take Part

1. Take a look at the menu here at Ben Tunnciffe Sennen Cove and order something you haven’t tried before.

2. Simply ask someone to take a photo of you (or you could draw a picture) tucking into this new food experience. You’ll also need to tell us what it was like in a few words, and provide some details (your age and the date you visited us).

3. Post your picture and info to our Facebook page, Tweet us @BenAtSennen using the hashtag #TasteOfSennen, or email competition@benatsennen.co.uk to be in with a chance of winning… If you’ve drawn a picture you can leave it at the restaurant with your details.

4. The competition is open from 8th June – 31st July.

There are two categories – one for ages 5 – 13, and one for anyone over the age of 13.

Prize Details

The winning entries in both age groups will be chosen by our expert judge, chef Ben Tunnicliffe.

The winners will be notified on 14th August 2016.

Each prize includes a meal for four people, to be taken before 31st December 2016. The prize includes up to three courses and soft drinks, to a maximum value of £150. No cash alternative is available and the prize cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer. Only one entry per person is allowed. If the selected winners are from the same family, the runner up from the +13 category will be awarded the other prize.

This competition is not being run in association with Facebook or any other social media platform, and is not being endorsed or sponsored in any way. We reserve the right to remove any unsuitable entries, or any posts not in the spirit of the competition.

Ladies Surf Club Launched

We are excited to be involved with Sennen’s first Ladies Surf Club, which will take place every Friday for the next few months.

The restaurant has teamed up with our great friends at Sennen Surfing Centre to offer an irresistible package of surf tuition, laughs and Prosecco – all within the beautiful setting of Sennen Cove.

Every week ladies of all abilities are invited to come along, enjoy an hour or so in the water with Dave Muir and his team of expert tutors, followed by coffee or Prosecco on the terrace here at the restaurant.

If you prefer you can also grab yourself a SUP board and paddle – perfect for days when waves are in short supply…

Ladies Surf Club is a great opportunity to get in the water and give it a go, or hone your skills – as well as make new friends while getting some exercise in the fresh air. If you’re lucky, you’ll also experience a stunning sunset from our terrace overlooking the golden sands.

And why not stay for dinner? Our menu features hearty post-surf options (homemade burgers, delicious fish and chips) as well as healthy options and plenty of local fish fresh from market.

Ladies Surf Club starts at 6pm every Friday, with an hour and a half in the water followed by unrestricted socialising!

We hope to see you there soon.
