2nd Annual Sennen Surf Contest

A fun, family-friendly Surf Contest is returning to Sennen Cove for its second year this October, as we partner with three other local businesses to host the event.

Ben and the team are working with Sennen Surfing Centre, Sennen Surf Company Shop and Smart Surf School to plan the two-day event on 28th and 29th October, which will see surfers of all ages and abilities take to the water.

The first day of competition will end with an evening event here at the restaurant (in our new outside bar or ‘Surfers Den’), followed by a second day of competitive events and a prize ceremony.

Sennen Cove was named one of the top ten surf locations in the world by The Guardian newspaper recently, alongside destinations in Mexico, Mozambique and Hawaii.

Sennen was singled out for its consistency, lack of crowds, and its wild and unspoiled location; conditions competitors will be able to lap-up during this half-term event.

Dave Muir, Head Coach at Sennen Surfing Centre, is looking forward to marking the end of another extremely busy and rewarding summer season:

“It’s been a fantastic summer here at Sennen, with record numbers learning to surf with us or improving their skills. For example, our Ladies Surf Club on a Friday night has been hugely popular. The Surf Contest will be the perfect opportunity to celebrate what everyone has achieved.”

We can’t wait to act as the hub for this exciting event. Competitors and spectators will be able to enjoy great food and drink in relaxed surroundings as they watch the competition unfold; fringe events will include beach games, barbeques and live music.

Ben commented: “I’m really looking forward to the Surf Contest – in fact my whole family are keen to get involved! It’s the perfect opportunity for everyone to come together before winter hibernation kicks in.”

The Sennen Surf Contest is also a chance to reflect and celebrate the life of local lifeboatman and surfer Ashley Moffatt, whom the community continues to remember fondly over a decade since his fatal car accident.

Everyone from beginners through to serious surfers will have the chance to take part, with prizes in the form of cash, vouchers and surfing gear available in several categories.

There are also opportunities for brand sponsors to get involved – please contact Sennen Surfing Centre for more information.

Yoga on the Terrace Returns

We were so pleased with the popularity of our yoga classes last summer, and are thrilled to be able to deliver these gentle, life-affirming sessions once again.

Starting from the 30th July, local practitioner Julie Stone of Land’s End Yoga will be leading classes twice a week (every Saturday and Tuesday at 9am). Taking place on our terrace, Julie’s yoga sessions are an unbeatable way to start the day; exercise and meditation combined, overlooking the golden sand of Sennen Cove, with the sounds of the ocean as your workout soundtrack.

The sessions are suitable for all abilities and will run throughout the summer until 3rd September. We serve brunch from 10am, providing the perfect excuse to stay on after your workout and refuel ready for the day ahead.

Julie combines expert knowledge of Ashtanga, Iyengar and Hatha yoga styles, and also brings a compassionate approach to her practice – drawing on yoga’s therapeutic and rehabilitative benefits. Her classes at Sennen will be gentle, relaxing and inspiring, combining movement and meditation in a supportive and nurturing environment.

Julie is also offering the opportunity to book private sessions with her here on the terrace, for those who want to focus on a specific aspect of their yoga practice, or perhaps are looking for one-to-one support.

There is no need to book – simply turn up. Please wear appropriate clothing, and your own yoga mat if possible (mats will be provided for those that need them). Sessions last an hour.

Introducing: Sennen Sounds

Here at Ben Tunnicliffe Sennen Cove, we can’t think of a better way of spending a summer evening than relaxing on the terrace, with chilled DJ sets on the go, and the chance to enjoy a few drinks with friends.

So, this year we are launching Sennen Sounds; music sessions every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 29th July throughout the summer. Plus, our new outside bar – ‘Surfers Den’ – means you won’t have to stray too far from the last rays of the setting sun.

The fun starts at 9pm and continues until 1am (bar until midnight). We’re not talking Ibiza here – just feel-good music in a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. The bar will be serving a selection of beers, ciders, wines and spirits as well as soft drinks.

After a busy day on the beach, our terrace is a stunning vantage point in which to enjoy a few sundowners (look out for pods of dolphins) and soak up the atmosphere – in one of the most spectacular coastal spots in the whole of the UK…

Dino Zamparelli races at The British Grand Prix Weekend

It’s evident when you visit the restaurant that we have a passion for Motorsport with nose cones of historic formula 1 cars suspended from the roof and pictures and posters on the walls. Why you ask? Simple really… it encompasses the essence of one of our passions.

When we mention formula 1, Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and after last weekend the British Grand Prix at Silverstone springs to mind… however on this occasion when we mention formula 1 we are referring to our own Dino Zamparelli at the British Grand Prix. In one of our earlier blogs we described how we stuck our money where our hearts are and sponsored a brilliant  Porsche Carrera Cup and British Racing Driver Club rising star.  Born a west country boy, Dino’s heritage is half English with Italian origins gifting him a truly textbook racing driver’s name! With his father being a world powerboat champion, it is unsurprising that Dino has inherited the ‘need for speed’. Dino’s career so far ranges from karting, the Ginetta Junior Championship, Formula Renault, Fia Formula 2 and GP3 Series.

Back to the British Grand Prix. Last weekend Dino raced in the European version of the one make Porsche series in which he currently competes –  the Porsche Supercup championship. Dino raced with his Carrera Cup UK team GT Marques, but was been entered as a wild card for the European event.

“I was delighted to be racing at Silverstone again – the home of British motorsport. To be racing in front of over 140 thousand people is such a cool buzz and nice to be doing it in GT’s this time after a number of seasons with the Formula I supporting series – GP3. Being a British driver at the British Grand Prix, albeit not as an Formula 1 driver, is something very special…the crowd gets behind us Brits!

My strategy was to attack the weekend as normal. There was no change to my approach. I knew the car well although the set up and some of the rules are slightly different. Subtle differences that can make a huge difference to set up and ultimate race pace but this is a one off event for the season and we brought all our experience from Carrera GB. After mixed fortunes during limited qualifying, rain on the out lap caused a bit of chaos with our car set for the dry but we did OK overall and great to test the water in European Supercup – something we’re considering for next season.

It’s great to be connected with young local talent. We sponsor Dino you will see his desire to perform, to exceed and be the best – an ethos we share here at Ben Tunnicliffe at Sennen Cove.

Watch out for our next blog when Dino races at Snetterton, Norfolk on the 30/31 July which will be on ITV 4. Join the journey with us….

Where Do We Source Our Fresh Local Fruit & Veg?

It’s a question we are often asked by guests here at Sennen, perhaps after they have enjoyed a dish packed with seasonal greens, or one of our homemade ice creams laced with summer fruit. The answer is that we are very lucky to have great relationships with local growers within a short distance of Sennen Cove, and it’s thanks to these relationships that our menu packs a fresh punch all year round.

One such grower is Bosavern Community Farm, which is located just a few miles away near St Just. This not-for-profit social enterprise is a community initiative to produce and sell local food, and to encourage people to come together to use the land for educational, environmental and social purposes.

The Bosavern polytunnels, fruit cages, bee hives and hens are kept busy supplying a farm shop, a veg box scheme, local markets and businesses like ours. We talk to the team every week to find out what’s in abundance before placing an order, and our fresh veg is picked and transported the next day. It’s the epitome of field-fresh, low food miles sourcing and we love it!

Another fantastic local grower is Alsia Cross Market Garden, which is also just a short drive away in St Buryan. Ben has been working with these guys for many years – first at The Tolcarne and now at Ben Tunnicliffe Sennen Cove, and we really rate the produce and service.

Alsia Cross Market Garden is an organic family farm growing vegetables, salads and herbs. The team supply a shop in St Just as well as a small number of local restaurants – so we count ourselves very lucky!

We have huge respect for the people growing such fabulous produce, and we treat the fruits of their labours with the utmost respect. We are lucky to be able to offer an evolving menu of seasonal specials designed by Ben, which gives our chefs the opportunity to showcase these fresh ingredients as they arrive at the kitchen door – after the short journey from the field.

Recipe – Whole Orange and Polenta Cake

Recipe – Whole Orange and Polenta Cake

Our delicious cakes, made fresh every day by Ben and the kitchen team, are always in high demand. However, the most requests for recipes we send to the kitchen are for this humble looking Polenta Cake – a moist and satisfying morning or afternoon treat, infused with the flavours of orange and almonds.

WHOLE ORANGE & POLENTA CAKE

Serves: 8-12

INGREDIENTS
1 LARGE ORANGE
6 EGGS
250 G SUGAR
125 G POLENTA
125 G FRESHLY GROUND ALMONDS
2 TBSP POPPYSEEDS
1 TBSP BAKING POWDER

METHOD

Wash the orange and place it in a pan. Cover with water, half cover the pan and cook the orange until it is tender: this will take about 1 hour.
Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 180°C. Grease and line a springf orm cake tin (or use a silicone mould).
Drain the orange well, then cut in half and remove any pips. Fit the food processor with the multipurpose blade and purée the orange, skin and all, on high speed. Mix in the eggs, one
by one, then add the sugar on the same speed. Add the remaining ingredients, except the crème fraîche, on low speed. Mix briefly to a smooth batter.
Spoon the batter into the prepared cake tin. Bake the cake for about 1 hour.
Leave the cake to cool on a wire rack, then slice into wedges and serve with generous spoonfulls of crème fraîche.
Now sit back and enjoy…

Sennen Ladies Surf Club – First Hand!

Running the restaurant and having a young family is challenging enough, so
I never thought that I would be willing to jump into the sea on
Friday evening to join first ladies only surfing club! Dave (owner of
Sennen Surfing Centre and Sennen Surf Shop) says that this is the UK’s  ladies
only club. Gosh! This puts everything into perspective!
Usually family (certainly my family) going to the beach means: boys and
my husband in the water and I am on the beach trying to catch up with
reading and some peace and quiet. Its no surprise to me that ladies surfing clubs are
rare! And the wet suits! What a palava!
Anyway, despite many obstacles on the day I could not avoid the moment of truth so I bravely joined the rest of keen ladies.

We had a short session on the beach with a wonderful young teacher – part of Dave’s team and off we went into the water. I never thought I would have so much fun! It was great! The sun was shining, waves were just right (very small!) and
we all had a go. I struggled for most of the session – balancing whilst laying on the board was a problem for me for a start; but after a short while I stopped worrying
and just went for any and every small wave that came. It really was fun.
I even managed to almost stand on the board! My children would be very proud of me I thought and I felt great afterwards.
We finished the session with a glass of prosecco on the terrace of the
restaurant watching a wonderful Sennen sunset! What a fabulous evening!
But I think the biggest surprise for me was to wake up the next morning – my first thought of the day – how great it would be to go surfing today! Have I caught the surfing bug already?

Sennen Ladies Surf Club – every Friday 8 pounds including a a glass of prosecco on the restaurant terrace.

#TasteOfSennen

We are on the hunt for intrepid foodies of all ages, who have tried something new here at our restaurant this summer. As a reward we are offering two families lunch on the house! See prize details below…

As parents of young children, Ben and Kinga know that it can be difficult to persuade little people to try new things, even when you know they are missing out on something really tasty. Even as adults, we often decide that we don’t like something before we’ve really given it a shot.

So this summer we are on a mission to encourage our lovely guests to try something for the first time. Anything from your very first taste of Cornish crab, to a freshly shucked oyster, marinated olives, even a particularly smelly cheese or smoked fish for breakfast…

You never know – your new food experience might even join surfing, kite flying, or sand castle building as one of the funniest and most memorable moments of your holiday, especially if all the family take part!

How To Take Part

1. Take a look at the menu here at Ben Tunnciffe Sennen Cove and order something you haven’t tried before.

2. Simply ask someone to take a photo of you (or you could draw a picture) tucking into this new food experience. You’ll also need to tell us what it was like in a few words, and provide some details (your age and the date you visited us).

3. Post your picture and info to our Facebook page, Tweet us @BenAtSennen using the hashtag #TasteOfSennen, or email competition@benatsennen.co.uk to be in with a chance of winning… If you’ve drawn a picture you can leave it at the restaurant with your details.

4. The competition is open from 8th June – 31st July.

There are two categories – one for ages 5 – 13, and one for anyone over the age of 13.

Prize Details

The winning entries in both age groups will be chosen by our expert judge, chef Ben Tunnicliffe.

The winners will be notified on 14th August 2016.

Each prize includes a meal for four people, to be taken before 31st December 2016. The prize includes up to three courses and soft drinks, to a maximum value of £150. No cash alternative is available and the prize cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer. Only one entry per person is allowed. If the selected winners are from the same family, the runner up from the +13 category will be awarded the other prize.
