The Plastic Straw is No More!

I have been working as a barman at Ben Tunnicliffe Sennen Cove for just over a year now. During this time I have met a lot of great people and learnt a whole load of new skills.

My career as an artist continues to occupy me in my spare time, and the rest of the year when the outside bar is closed. At first I thought it best to separate the art from the bar job, but as any artist will tell you, art is inseparable from life, and good art addresses the issues and times in which it is made.

One of the themes running through my artwork is the environmental impact of surfers in the landscape. The ‘Toxic Paradox’ of plastic surfboards and petrochemical derived neoprene wetsuits, inspired the multi-coloured Surf Flower prints, guests can see hanging on the wall in the Restaurant.

So, handing out single-use plastics in the shape of straws and stirrers with the drinks I served really bothered me. Several times as I walked across the beach on my way to surf in my break time, I stopped to pick up plastic straws that could had come from drinks I had served in the bar.

Plastic in the marine environment is a real problem. It endangers sea life and takes decades to start to break down. Plastic floats in the marine environment and takes up around 40% of the ocean surface. Plastic waste traps and drowns sea mammals, it is ingested by fish and ends up in our food chain, the results of which are not yet fully understood.

The Cornwall based charity, Surfers Against Sewage along with many others, have been highlighting this issue for a long time. They are currently running a resist the plastic campaign www.plasticfree.org.uk .There are also some great films you can watch explaining the scope and consequences of the problem. https://www.plasticoceans.org/film/

Some uses of plastic are essential, (not many) but things such as single–use throwaway plastic straws are not, so we have decided at Ben Tunnicliffe Sennen Cove  not to offer you a plastic straw with your drink at the moment.  We are currently researching suppliers of alternative – paper straws or biodegradable straws, of which we keep a small stock for those guests who really want one.

Saturday 5th August we are celebrating Oyster Day at Sennen

We’re celebrating National Oyster Day here at Sennen on the 5th August – the most versatile mollusc!  A day when you can celebrate by eating fresh oysters by the Seaside, or for some, buying oyster pearls for loved ones.

The history of Oyster Day is unclear.  Some say that Casanova, that infamous 18th century cad, started his day with a breakfast of 50 oysters.  Whether he ate them, for their aphrodisiac properties or simply because he enjoyed who knows. Others say the history of Oyster Day is simply quite unknown, but it is clear the history of human’s relationship with oyster’s dates back to Roman times as there is evidence of people in the United Kingdom and France farming oysters.

Oyster is the common name for a number of different groups of bivalve molluscs. Some species of oysters are commonly eaten, either cooked or raw, as a delicacy. While other types of oyster, such as pearl oysters, are not normally consumed by humans, they are harvested for their pearls.

So  come and celebrate National Oyster Day with us on the 5th August and slurp up a half shell. We’ll be shucking Oysters in the Surf Den to order all day from opening. Half a dozen followed by a home made pizza and a glass of fizz or chilled white – perfect! And with our resident DJ and Sennen Sounds to chill the mood from 4pm.

Signs of Spring at Ben Tunnicliffe Sennen Cove

As the weather gradually turns warmer we begin to think of the longer brighter days and as nature is springing out all over the place there’s no better time to head outdoors to Ben Tunnicliffe Sennen Cove over Easter and the School Holiday Break.

Family and Dog friendly nestled in the heart of Sennen, a visit to our beachfront is a must for your Easter and School Holidays Break.

With views looking out on to the beach and into the blue waters, Ben Tunnicliffe Sennen Cove offers a variety of culinary delights for your break. Making the most of its coastal location, the menu sees a variety of different fish and seafood available as well as options for those who fancy something a little further detached from the nearby waters.

Where there is good food there should also be good wine, and good wine there is! A variety of wines are available which have all been carefully selected to perfectly compliment the food.

It’s certainly a place to Play, Eat and Drink.

Located near to the Minack Theatre and Lands End, Ben Tunnicliffe Sennen Cove is the perfect place to stop off on your day trip.

The Minack Theatre:

Located in Porthcurno, the Minack Theatre is an open-air theatre with a truly incredible story. The theatre was constructed by a lady called Rowena Cade and her gardener, Billy Rawlings, with the intention of the space being used by a local village group to stage a performance of The Tempest. The performance went down a storm and Miss Cade spent every winter making improvements to the theatre so that it could be used for performances throughout the summer months.

Looking up from the stage, you can see rows and rows of seats, the majority of which have been engraved with the names of plays or performances. The seats, as well as the pillars, steps and walkways are crafted from concrete that was made using local beach sand (which Rowena carried tons and tons of over the years from the local Portcurno beach).

Today, the theatre is still used throughout the majority of the year to host concerts, plays, storytelling sessions and much more. The Minack is also open to the public to explore outside of performance hours

A truly distinctive attraction, well worth a visit voted this month by the Team at Sennen.

Sennen Spring Beach Clean 2017

April 3rd – 9th. Surfers Against Sewage & Ecover Call For Volunteers To Help Clean Beaches & Dramatically Increase Marine Plastic Recycling

Surfers Afgainst Sewage ( SAS ) have co-ordinated the first big beach clean of 2017 for the week of 3rd – 9th April. As in previous years we expect a large group of volunteers to hit both Sennen and Gwenver to help clear the beach of plastic and other debris to help improve the marine environment and make the beach a nicer place to be in the process.

Dave Muir of Sennen Surfing Centre is the SAS local rep and has been arranging the big beach clean for Sennen and Gwenver for a number of years and will again be co-ordinating the local effort this season.

The big beach clean at Sennen is always a fun event to get involved in with participants enjoying a fun walk along the beach and a good chat and a coffee at Ben Tunnicliffe Sennen Cove afterwards. And it’s great for our precious coastal and marine environment.

This year SAS is expecting over 10,000 volunteers to help remove some 50,000 plastic bottles from our beaches across the UK plus other plastic rubbish washed up with the tide.

Contact the restaurant or Dave Muir at www.sennensurfingcentre.com for further information

2nd Annual Sennen Surf Contest

A fun, family-friendly Surf Contest is returning to Sennen Cove for its second year this October, as we partner with three other local businesses to host the event.

Ben and the team are working with Sennen Surfing Centre, Sennen Surf Company Shop and Smart Surf School to plan the two-day event on 28th and 29th October, which will see surfers of all ages and abilities take to the water.

The first day of competition will end with an evening event here at the restaurant (in our new outside bar or ‘Surfers Den’), followed by a second day of competitive events and a prize ceremony.

Sennen Cove was named one of the top ten surf locations in the world by The Guardian newspaper recently, alongside destinations in Mexico, Mozambique and Hawaii.

Sennen was singled out for its consistency, lack of crowds, and its wild and unspoiled location; conditions competitors will be able to lap-up during this half-term event.

Dave Muir, Head Coach at Sennen Surfing Centre, is looking forward to marking the end of another extremely busy and rewarding summer season:

“It’s been a fantastic summer here at Sennen, with record numbers learning to surf with us or improving their skills. For example, our Ladies Surf Club on a Friday night has been hugely popular. The Surf Contest will be the perfect opportunity to celebrate what everyone has achieved.”

We can’t wait to act as the hub for this exciting event. Competitors and spectators will be able to enjoy great food and drink in relaxed surroundings as they watch the competition unfold; fringe events will include beach games, barbeques and live music.

Ben commented: “I’m really looking forward to the Surf Contest – in fact my whole family are keen to get involved! It’s the perfect opportunity for everyone to come together before winter hibernation kicks in.”

The Sennen Surf Contest is also a chance to reflect and celebrate the life of local lifeboatman and surfer Ashley Moffatt, whom the community continues to remember fondly over a decade since his fatal car accident.

Everyone from beginners through to serious surfers will have the chance to take part, with prizes in the form of cash, vouchers and surfing gear available in several categories.

There are also opportunities for brand sponsors to get involved – please contact Sennen Surfing Centre for more information.
