“Brands Hatch is, for me, the best circuit in the world" – Gerhard Berger
Others no doubt feel the same as Gerhard Berger when it comes to the Brands Hatch circuit. With its unique combination of hills, dips and chambers and not forgetting the infamous ‘Paddock Bend’ corner that remains one of the greatest in the world; Plunging blind and quickly downhill, there is a lot to love about this special place for both drivers and spectators.
Brands Hatch was in fact first used as a dirt track motorcycle circuit on farmland and more notably has hosted 12 runnings of the British Grand Prix, between 1964 and 1986. As well as historically hosting the British GP, ‘Brands’ currently holds many British and International racing events.
Included in these many racing events, on Sunday 2nd October, was the British Touring Car Championship and more importantly for Ben Tunnicliffe Sennen Cove the finale of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB.
As we have joined Dino Zamparelli on his journey this year, it was an absolute pleasure to support the BRDC Rising Star’s final push to hold his second place in the championship.
Race 1 got off to a strong start with Dino starting in 4th on the grid and quickly fighting his way with a great move around the outside of the Champion Dan Cammish into 3rd place. Dino put up a strong defence and said of the race,
"We struggled so much in that race. Unfortunately the car just did not feel great again, and I was so far off the pace. All I was doing was focussing on not making any mistakes so that 4th place couldn't catch and pass me. It was close at the line, as 4th place basically drew side by side with me, but I held on...just. I was defending for my life!"
Defending for his life paid off and Dino finished in in 3rd place, making the podium for Race 1. A fantastic result.
Race 2 was a lot more straight forward, as the GT Marques team made some changes and this seemed to allow Dino to hold his own more comfortably. Starting in 2nd place, he tucked in behind Dan Cammish and followed him round. With 2nd place in the Championship still in Zamparelli's pocket at this stage, it was all about making no mistakes and holding station.
Having finished 2nd in Race 2, this also meant that the Porsche Carrera Cup GB 2016 had concluded and Dino Zamparelli finished 2nd in the championship. A huge achievement for the Bristol bred driver.
Dino reflected on the race and season and said,
"It was a slight bit of relief to actually cement 2nd overall. I can certainly say that was not our aim at the half way point in the season, when we were only 3 points off the top and miles ahead of 3rd. However, with all of our issues of late with the car, we were somewhat holding on and happy to finish 2nd.
"It was a shame at times we just couldn't extract anything more out of some of the races later on, but that's Motor racing, as they say."
Ben Tunnicliffe at Sennen Cove would like to offer our congratulations to Dino and are proud to have joined the journey.
