Our beach-side restaurant at Sennen Cove occupies one of the most impressive dining locations in the country, commanding spectacular views over this rugged and unspoilt bay in West Cornwall.

About Us

The iconic building, which blends into the sand dune setting like a piece of driftwood, is the result of the commitment and dedication of The Shannon family, who have been custodians of the site since the 1950s. Philip Shannon together with sons Dan and Jack, constructed the architect designed wooden framed structure which was to become a busy restaurant boasting a sun-drenched terrace overlooking one of the best beaches in Cornwall.

Who we are

The classically trained chef Ben Tunnicliffe opened his first restaurant as a joint venture in Penzance with his wife Kinga and in partnership with Jean Shrimpton and her husband Michael. The Abbey Restaurant quickly gained an outstanding reputation for its quality of food and service. This was confirmed with Ben’s award of a Michelin Star in 2003, which he retained until the sale of the business in 2008.Subsequently Ben was invited to become part of the launch team for the prestigious Scarlett Hotel in Mawgan Porth. After establishing the kitchen, Ben held the position of Head Chef. In 2012, Ben went back to his roots and took over the Tolcarne Inn in Newlyn - to produce great seasonal food locally, but in much simpler setting. In a short space of time, the Tolcarne Inn has become a popular destination for outstanding quality fresh fish, locally sourced food, and great beers and wines. To be by the sea has been a dream and so Ben and his wife Kinga feel privileged to have the opportunity to take over this fabulous building and bring something new to Sennen Cove. The aim is to create a relaxed and friendly environment for families, dog walkers, any walkers for that matter, swimmers, surfers, beach lovers, rain lovers, sea watching in the winter lovers….The menu features family favourites and coastal classics, executed to perfection and using local, seasonal produce.

Ethos

It is all about enjoying life and making people smile. We have busy lives, but it’s important to find a minute or two to enjoy family time in beautiful surroundings – dining out for us is about a friendly environment, good food, efficient service and good wines and beers. Being part of local community is important to us as well Sourcing and seasonality is all-important. A good relationship with small producers who are passionate about what they do is essential, and helps us offer an evolving menu packed with fresh flavours, featuring the best produce from land and sea. Where there is good food there should also be good wine. We’ve worked hard to source interesting and unusual wines from around the world, in a list carefully designed to complement our food. And in an environment that reflects something of our personality. The service is equally important to us - in recruiting every member, we want to work with individuals with a passion and commitment. We are enthusiastic about the industry and we are proud to provide on-going training opportunities and career progression. We aspire to create a work / life balance that allows our staff to enjoy living in Cornwall as well as working here.
